Rabbi Samuel disputed the orthodox belief in Moshe writing the torah. At first I felt he was wrong. Then he explained that Torah is all instruction not just the Pentateuch. This made me desire to be intellectually patient.
At an Oneg with guests Rabbi Samuel was asked about the meat and dairy prohibition. He mentioned mother’s milk. I piped up and asked if it didn’t have to do with avoiding extravagance. I had read about it somewhere. He said no curtly then left for the day. However, he came back ten minutes later and said there was something to the idea. We concluded that if you take both the milk and the meat you would eventually be reducing the herd. I felt happy.
At the torah service Rabbi Samuel mentioned Environmentalism. He cited the jubilee year. He also stated, “Those who don’t care about the environment will not care about other people. Those who do not care about other people will not care about the environment.” He also let loose against usury. I found out later he had just bought a car!
Read the Pirkei Avot in English. It was fantastic.
Rabbi mentioned Fanz Rozenweig’s the star of Redemption. We discussed Shabbat in class.
I read Ruth and Micah.
Ani Uveyti Naavod Et H"
Not on mortals do I rely, nor upon angels do I depend, but on the God of the Universe, the God of truth, whose Torah is truth, and who abounds in deeds of goodness and truth. In God do I put my trust; unto God’s holy, precious being do I utter praise. Open my heart to Your Torah. Answer my prayers and the prayers of all Your people Israel for goodness, for life, and for peace. Amen. - Zohar, Parashat Vayakhel
